ALOV Art proudly presents Meeting at the Horizon, a group exhibition reuniting three pioneering multidisciplinary artists—Derek Boshier, Penny Slinger, and Philip Vaughan—whose creative journeys first converged in 1960s London. Educated at the UK’s top art institutions, the trio found common ground in their youth through experimentation and a shared desire to challenge boundaries. Their paths converged again in Los Angeles, shaped by decades of personal and artistic journeys.

ONLINE PREVIEW

Running from June 6 to July 5, the exhibition explores themes of nature, memory, and journeys—not only as physical forms, but as emotional and internal terrains, inviting audiences to reflect on what it means to meet at the horizon, where memory, imagination, and artistic vision converge.

Exhibition Dates: June 6 – July 5, 2025

Panel Discussion in Memory of Derek Boshier

Thursday, June 19, 2025 | 4 PM

A heartfelt conversation between artists Penny Slinger and Philip Vaughan, sharing personal stories, reflections, and memories of their friend and fellow artist, Derek Boshier. This special panel honors Boshier’s legacy and lasting influence on contemporary art through the voices of those who knew him best.

Location: Bergamot Station, 2525 Michigan ave. Suite F2, Santa Monica, CA 90404

Derek Boshier, a founding voice in the British Pop Art movement, rose to prominence in the 1960s alongside David Hockney and Allen Jones. A Guggenheim Fellow and Royal College of Art alumnus, Boshier’s work bridges painting, drawing, photography, and film.

In this exhibition, his Man Falling Wearing a Mexican Mask channels myth, symbolism, and vulnerability through bold theatrical figuration and expressionism, while works from his Cellphone series reflect on the fragmentation of memory in the digital age—contrasting vivid, screen-based recollections with the muted tones of present-day disconnection.

Penny Slinger, a pioneer of feminist surrealism, reclaims the female form as sacred and indivisible from nature. A graduate of Chelsea School of Art, influenced by her mentor Roland Penrose and her connection to Max Ernst, she developed her visual language in dialogue with the European Surrealist tradition. Her work—spanning photomontage, sculpture, painting, and film—explores sexuality, mysticism, and the subconscious.

Meeting at the Horizon features Slinger’s Women of the Rocks series, which gives form to one of her ongoing themes combining aspects of nature with the feminine. These works blur the boundaries between body and earth, inviting viewers into a space where femininity is not represented by nature, but emerges from it.

Philip Vaughan, a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, drawing, sculpture, and public installation, rooted in a foundation of architecture and kinetic art. A graduate of Cambridge and Chelsea School of Art, Vaughan is known for public works like the Neon Tower at London’s Hayward Gallery and the Bamboo Sculpture at the Los Angeles Arboretum, where he integrates structure and abstraction with a deep sensitivity to environment.

Vaughan's paintings in the exhibition are built on actual marine charts used during his transatlantic voyage, transforming navigational tools into emotional landscapes. These layered compositions chart not just a physical journey, but a metaphysical one—where the horizon becomes a metaphor for distance, memory, and possibility.

As part of the exhibition program, multimedia artist Lucinda Dilworth collaborates with Vaughan to transform his painting Walking Tall into an immersive experience through projection mapping, merging traditional brushwork with light and motion in a striking digital dimension.
