The mission of Public Allies is to create a just and equitable society and the diverse leadership to sustain it. Public Allies Delaware (PADE) is one of 23 sites across the nation working toward this mission. Operated by the University of Delaware Joseph R. Biden, Jr. School of Public Policy and Administration's Center for Community Research and Service, PADE is primarily known for its signature AmeriCorps program.

Launched in 1993, our AmeriCorps program has helped hundreds of underrepresented, emerging leaders work for the common good alongside fellow changemakers, strengthening our local communities, Delaware, and this country. Our challenging, full-time, 10-month AmeriCorps program puts participants on a pathway to furthering their education and career and developing their leadership abilities and influence. While participating in our program, they apprentice at a local nonprofit, learn about asset-based community development and build community, and participate in weekly workshops to expand their personal and professional skills and knowledge.

Our leadership development program challenges and supports our participants in becoming leaders who innovate, connect across social boundaries, facilitate collaborative action, recognize and mobilize community assets, commit to continuous learning, and are accountable to those they work with and serve. Additionally they get personalized coaching to pursue their education and career goals, build relationships with a network of local leaders, and become a part of our national movement of leaders working for change.

We believe everyone leads, and each year we choose people from a diversity of backgrounds to join our unique AmeriCorps program. All successful applicants are ready to take the next step in their professional life, willing to learn and grow, and are committed to stepping up as a leader in their community. We seek applicants who have college degrees, as well as those who don’t. We welcome applicants with extensive work histories, and those who are still exploring a career path. We consider applicants who have a criminal history, as well as those who don’t.

We stand firmly grounded in our belief that communities already have the leadership they need to create lasting social change. We invite you to join (or continue with) us in this work.
