About this event

There are many roles within the fragrance industry, from perfumer to evaluator to fragrance educator. In this event, the Institute for Art and Olfaction highlights a crucial but little-known role in the fragrance industry, sharing an insider's perspective. Join Fragrance Education Expert Amy Poland for evening exploring how fragrance training can enrich scent appreciation, enliven perfumery through storytelling and stoking curiosity -- and make perfume sales.

After an introduction to and discussion of Amy's career in the fragrance industry, we'll participate in several smelling exercises demonstrating the techniques and value of fragrance education. Each participant will be provided scent strips of perfumes from the IAO Archive and encouraged to discuss the scents, with encouragement and training tips from our resident expert.

If you have ever desired to translate your enthusiasm about scent into words, this is an opportunity to see how the fragrance industry has done it and to try it out yourself!

ABOUT AMY POLAND

Amy Poland is a Fragrance Education Expert. Amy started her career in fashion, fragrance and beauty in the mid 1980’s as a Ford Model and Estee Lauder promotional specialist. Working across luxury brands and trained by the best in retail cosmetics, Amy joined Bloomingdale’s Boca Raton where she developed a passion for consumers and outstanding service. As a Fragrance Foundation Certified Fragrance Sales Specialist, storytelling became her unique trademark at the Guerlain counter and beyond.

Moving to Los Angeles in 2001 Amy began as a regional retail trainer leading seminars and fragrance festivals. Later as a National Education Manager her unique way of presenting gave salespeople confidence in the art of storytelling via multiple brands like Boss, Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana. Working with multiple retailers in the US, the creation of focused training programs developed sales specialists to host personalized customer events. Engaging consumers with fragrance narratives about the brand, mood and scent created a lasting trend in scent sales.

In 2012, Amy set her sights on international brand education in travel retail Americas and distributors’ specialty retailers across South America. In person brand sales trainings in English, Spanish and Portuguese were instrumental in sales, motivation for winning sales contests to travel to Prestige Academy conferences. Unique Train the Trainer programs developed consistent narratives across countries using storytelling to inspire and stir imaginations for 10 years.

Now Amy takes her experience to a new level in understanding how the sense of smell connects people to the world around us. Research into brain function in dementia and Alzheimer’s patients has been vital in understanding the effects on human interaction as the brain’s capacity diminishes.

How to we keep our memory alive and engaged as we age in the 21st century? Stay tuned.
