Medieval Matters III: Pigments through the Ages

This hands-on event provides an opportunity to learn about medieval collections, multispectral imaging, and pigments. After a brief introduction to medieval materials, attention turns to the formulation of research questions about material collections and how new technologies may facilitate greater understanding of items while, even, raising new questions about them. Special attention will be drawn to a particular item of interest, the St. Agatha Manuscript owned by Memorial Art Gallery. The visit will include a display of pigments used in the creation of medieval manuscripts, handling of materials, and a demonstration of the RIT-developed multispectral imaging system. The event offers the opportunity to give greater context and understanding of pigments through the ages, an area of research of RIT's Cultural Heritage Imaging Lab, co-directed by Juilee Decker, Roger Easton, and Dave Messinger as a joint effort of the museum studies and imaging science programs.

All are welcome!

This evening is the third in a series of Medieval-focused events organized by the Museum Studies at RIT in conjunction with collaborators. The inaugural event was the week-long session featuring Dr. Will Noel, Princeton University. https://www.rit.edu/events/keynote-address-dr-will-noel-princeton-university.

This year's event is organized in partnership with the University of Rochester, Syracuse University, Memorial Art Gallery, RIT's museum studies program, and the Cary Graphic Arts Collection. Funding provided by the Central New York Humanities Corridor by supporting working group HF8.

HF8: Curating the Middle Ages is organized by Juilee Decker, Rochester Institute of Technology; Irina Savinetskaya of Syracuse University; Anna Siebach-Larsen of University of Rochester. https://www.cnycorridor.net/groups/hf8-curating-the-middle-ages/.
