Rethinking Public Service – Human Learning Systems & Measures that Matter

The Health Determinants Research Collaboration (a collaboration between PCC, UoP and HIVE Portsmouth) provides infrastructure to support research and evaluation learning and activity in the council. Our approach to evaluation and learning is being supported by Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) who are working with us over the 5 years of the programme. This relationship presents a unique opportunity to learn from two leaders in the field of Public Management, facilitated by Professor Hannah Hesselgreaves, Director of the Policy Evaluation and Research Unit at MMU.

This is a unique opportunity to hear from leaders in public health management and engage in rich discussion. While a virtual option is available, we recommend attending in person to benefit fully from the interactive elements and networking.

We also encourage you to attend both sessions, but understand this may not be possible due to capacity. You are very welcome to attend just one session.

Please only book if you intend to come, as space is limited. If you'd like to attend both, you’ll need to book each session separately. This helps maximise the opportunity for others to attend at least one.

If you're joining us for the afternoon session only (in-person), you're very welcome to arrive early and take part in informal networking at the Portland Building from 12:45pm to 1:45pm. We’d love to see you there!

Session 2: Mark Smith - Measures that Matter

Mark will share his experience of developing measures that reflect meaningful outcomes, through his experience in leading the Liberated Method, a relational approach to frontline practice that empowers individuals and communities. Mark is a Visiting Professor of Public Service Innovation at Manchester Metropolitan University and until recently, was Director of Public Service Reform at Gateshead Council. He will share how this method enables bespoke support and sustainable outcomes.
