Event description
Matthew Battles talks with Joe Lucia about history and developing future of libraries

About this Event

This year, our Beyond the Page public programming series explores the history and future of the book. As we celebrate the opening of the new Charles Library on Temple’s Main Campus, we’ll shine a light on one of the library’s most iconic resources—the book. How have books evolved? And in turn, how do libraries adapt to meet user needs? What will Charles Library make possible for our staff and patrons?

Join us as we kick off our fall event series with a conversation between Matthew Battles and Joe Lucia, dean of Libraries, about the history of libraries and the library as a social, cultural, and physical space.

Matthew Battles is associate director of metaLAB at Harvard University, where he develops design interventions, media provocations, and technology projects in collaboration with a team of architects, web designers, scholars and artists. Matthew has written about the cultural dimensions of science and technology for such venues as The American Scholar, The Atlantic, The Boston Globe, Harper’s Magazine, and The New York Times. He is also the author of Library: an Unquiet History, The Library Beyond the Book, and Palimpsest: A History of the Written Word.

Programs offered by Temple University Libraries are accessible to people with disabilities. Please contact Richie Holland, Director of Library Administration, at richieh@temple.edu or 215-204-3455 for more information, to request an accommodation, or with questions/concerns.
