Mastering Differentiation & Multilingual Support in the Content Classroom

Mastering Differentiation & Multilingual Support in the Content Classroom

By Keep Indiana Learning

Overview

Master WIDA Can-Dos, instructional strategies, differentiation, and scaffolding in content classes for ML Student Support.

This intensive one-day session is designed to maximize student engagement and academic learning time by reinforcing the foundational belief that all teachers are teachers of language. Participants will dive into evidence-based instructional strategies and collaborate on how to use proven frameworks to support Multilingual Learners (MLs) in the core content area classroom. This workshop focuses on lifting up what is already strong in your teaching by ensuring that every learner gets exactly what they need to grow. You will gain practical tools for systematically identifying student language needs and applying comprehensive language support.

Who Should Attend (Audience)

This workshop is targeted toward:

Classroom Teachers (especially those teaching content areas, often at the middle school level).

ML Collaborative Teachers seeking to increase understanding of their collaborative responsibilities regarding language support.

• Educators interested in understanding the nuances of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and effective strategies for newcomers.

What to Expect

Participants will engage in high-impact activities focused on planning and implementation, including:

Mastering Differentiation: Reviewing and applying the five types of differentiation (Content, Process, Product, Environment, and Assessment) to make subject matter concepts comprehensible.

Practical Framework Application: Learning the specific steps required to integrate WIDA Can-Do Descriptors into daily planning: identifying the language domain, identifying the Key Language Use (Recount, Explain, Argue, or Demonstrate), finding the student's proficiency level, and deciding how to effectively scaffold or differentiate instruction for each level.

Instructional Strategy Toolkit: Analyzing and practicing key instructional and procedural scaffolding techniques (such as using the S.W.I.R.L. method for lesson integration and various vocabulary instruction methods) to ensure students receive ample opportunities to use learning strategies.

Collaborative Planning: Time dedicated to planning a lesson using the reviewed curriculum, Can-Do Descriptors, and state standards, specifically incorporating Building Background and differentiation based on the session's information
