How should enterprises—both large and small—come to grips with the economic slowdown?

This isn’t the first time that Indian businesses have faced a serious economic slowdown. Yet, no one is quite certain just how long this phenomenon might last this time or indeed the best way to fight it.

There’s no dearth of macro-economic data that provide clues to the larger economic logjam. Just that the data doesn’t fully reflect the strife enterprises are facing, unless you tune into what’s going on, on the ground. And it isn’t a pretty picture: Businesses are laying off people in large numbers. Families are cutting back on consumption. Rural demand has petered out. Businesses are struggling to find working capital. The investment drought in the private sector continues.

In such a scenario, what do you do as a CXO or as an entrepreneurial leader? How do you learn to separate the signal from the noise, which could significantly impact your game plan—and eventually, the long-term health of your business and the system.
