Margaret Vega: Interstices
Overview
Multi-disciplinary artist Margaret Vega opens her solo show, Interstices, at Atlantic Gallery on November 11, 2025. A reception featuring wine tasting by Community Wine will take place on Thursday, November 13, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
The curation pendulates between the artist’s different bodies of work to consider persistent questions around the cataloging of history and hierarchy, recording human narratives, and the influence of personal and cultural history. One series investigates the crayon labeled Flesh that she used as a child, examining how color and classification shape perception, asking the difficult question, “Can we ever be Flesh neutral?”
The artist is inspired by counting systems, like the pre-colonial knot-based Inka language of Khipus and historical documentation that imposed a fixed lens based on skin color resulting in Damnatio Memoriae. Several of her pieces pose the question, “Are We Still Counting?”.
The found and placed artifacts in Vega’s most recent work are designed with a scale that reflects the human need to collect, to reorganize the rhythm of nature and give meaning to the symbolic, hierarchical cataloging of fragment and object. Simultaneously, Vega works with the representational landscape, “to re-connect with the cadence and order of nature while considering its overlapping relationship with time, myth, dreaming time or storytelling, all comparative elements marking our fleeting impermanence”.
Typical of Vega’s work, these pieces are like open ended poetry. The concepts are juxtaposed in the small spaces. Vega states, “…the Interstices that exist between thoughts, between time periods in our life that feel like emptiness, between the small unnoticed sliver of light and the pauses between questions as we search for answers, between awareness and knowledge. Without these cracks and crevices in life, movement could not exist. We would be stagnant.” Interstices will be on view through December 6.
