March for Science NYC Fireside Chats: A Three-Part Series on Racism in STEM
**Zoom information will be sent following registration. The Zoom link provided will be valid for all three events.**
6/17/2020 - A Space for BIPOC: This week by the fire, we are dedicating space for Black, Brown and Indigenous (BIPOC) STEM professionals, trainees and science advocates to take a moment and collectively unwind and grieve for the disproportionate loss of BIPOC lives. We will share stories, experiences, and try to heal. Open to Black, Brown and Indigenous POC only.
6/24/2020 - Understanding the Complexity of The Issue: What are microaggressions and macroaggressions? What’s the difference between equality, equity, and justice? How do these concepts apply to the current climate in STEM, and how is racism in STEM perpetuated in both institutional and personal ways? All of these questions and more will be addressed in this fireside chat discussion. Open to all.
7/1/2020 - Diversity and Inclusion in STEM - A Leaky Pipeline and an Empty Promise: Racism in STEM is not new, and academic institutions have attempted to “address” the issue by building pipelines to increase diverse hires and student acceptances. These “solutions” are fundamentally flawed if they do not address the systemic issues which perpetuated racism in the first place. How do we move forward? What needs to be done to truly support POC in STEM? We’ll discuss what changes need to be made in academia moving forward. Open to all.
