Event description

Description

In this workshop, participants explore classroom strategies that support the concrete, representational, abstract progression of mathematical understanding.

You'll learn how physical and visual models offer a fun and engaging way for students to develop their number sense, algebraic reasoning, and problem-solving skills. We'll address the mathematical concepts behinds scale models, as well as the teaching strategies that promote student success in creating and interpreting scale models.

This workshop is a hands-on learning experience, where educators will intepret scale models and create their own scale models based on word problems or number sentences.

Scale model activities are aligned with the mathematical practice standards, especially MP2, MP4, and MP6. Participants will learn how the activities in this workshop can beused in support of most elementary and middle school grade level standards.

About the Math

  • Four scale model progressions: base-10, additive, multiplicative, and patterns/functions

  • Best practices for teaching with arrays, number lines, and area models

  • Support number sense and operational understanding with models

  • Aligned with grade-level and mathematical practice standards

About the Teaching

  • Design 3-part workshop lessons using scale models

  • Assess student understanding through visual models

  • Address common students misconceptions

  • Facilitate high-impact collaborative learning

In this workshop, participants will engage in visual model activities as student-learners, learn the concepts behind the progressions, and plan standards-aligned lessons they can use in class the next day. Workshop registration includes class licenses for all templates and organizers needed to conduct your visual model lesson the next day.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Jeff Lisciandrello is an expert in math curriculum and student- centered instructional practices, with over 15 years experience as a classroom teacher, curriculum designer, and instructional coach. In Jeff’s workshops, educators, don’t just hear about differentiation and inquiry-based learning, they experience them first-hand.

ABOUT MULTIPLE REPRESENTATIONS

Our workshops cover practical classroom strategies for teaching math through multiple representations. Research shows that students best develop numeracy and mathematical reasoning by mastering five ways to represent mathematical ideas.

ABOUT MATH WORKSHOP

The math workshop model was developed by John van de Walle. This 3-part lesson structure supports active learning, collaboration, and mathematical discourse.

Participants will develop lesson plans based on the math workshop model, and have access to planning templates and graphic organizers to bring math workshop to their classrooms.

Sessions are designed for teachers, coaches, and supervisors of grades 3 through 8 math, though our sessions are open to all educators.
