About Nicole Combeau:
Nicole Combeau (b. Miami, FL) is a Colombian-American artist, educator, and cultural worker whose work explores memory, matrilineal relationships, and the intergenerational transmission of stories. Drawing from personal history and the collective experiences of Latin and Caribbean diasporas, her photographic practice centers vulnerability, belonging, and presence. Through photography, community engagement, and education, she honors women elders and immigrant communities.
Nicole’s educational work is deeply connected to her artmaking, using art as a tool for connection, memory, and community building.
About When Mangos Last in My Backyard Bloom'd:
When Mangos Last in My Backyard Bloom'd is an immersive, multi-sensory exhibit inspired by artist Jayme Kaye Gershen’s acclaimed short film, Mango Movie—which premiered at the New Orleans Film Festival and screened at DOC NYC—the exhibit transforms the essence of mango season into an emotional reflection on community and climate.
Set during peak mango season, this one-of-a-kind installation blends sound, film, sculpture, taste, and storytelling into a vibrant homage to Miami’s cultural and agricultural heart: the mango. The title of the exhibit and poem within the work, was inspired by poet and educator Carmen Misé's poem of the same title.
This exhibition is made possible through generous support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Green Space Miami, Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Seasons Farm Fresh, Subtropic Film Festival, and is proud to be a 2024 Knight New Works.
