Overview

Toxic employee behavior harms teams, lowers productivity, and creates lasting workplace stress, while emotional awareness builds healthier c

Every workplace eventually encounters individuals who are challenging to

collaborate with—those who gossip, resist direction, disrupt workflows, or

consistently strain team relationships. These toxic employee behaviors can create

ripple effects that far exceed what is visible on the surface.

In contrast, emotionally aware team members recognize their impact on others,

manage their reactions appropriately, and support a healthier workplace culture.

When a difficult employee displays ongoing counterproductive actions, the result is

stress, frustration, and measurable organizational loss. Research highlights the

seriousness of the issue:

 Nearly all employees have worked alongside a problem employee, and

many currently do.

 A significant segment has considered leaving due to ongoing negativity.

 Productivity often declines as a direct result of ongoing interpersonal conflict.

Just as one negative individual can influence an entire group, organizations

frequently feel the consequences long after the employee departs.

Areas Covered in the Session

1. The Human and Financial Impact

Learn how disruptive behavior leads to chaos, emotional strain, hidden damage, and

measurable losses in quality and revenue. Understand how unmanaged behaviors

undermine team morale, retention, and organizational performance.

2. Attitudes, Behaviors, and Managerial Consequences

Explore the A-B-C framework for understanding harmful conduct and the tools

leaders can use to redirect or address it within the broader context of managing

employees.

3. The Mindset Behind Toxic Behavior

Identify common patterns, manipulation tactics, and power dynamics often used by

challenging individuals. Examine how some employees selectively adjust their

behavior based on who is watching, leveraging expertise or status to influence

others.

4. Common but Ineffective Leadership Responses

Discover why attempts such as job restructuring, avoidance, or tolerating high-

performing disruptors rarely resolve the issue. Understand why clarity, consistency,

and actionable expectations matter more than focusing on mindset alone.

5. Proven Approaches to Prevent and Correct Toxicity

Gain strategies at every organizational level, including:

 Embedding healthy interpersonal conduct into core values

 Incorporating behavioral standards into evaluations

 Training leaders in conflict resolution and behavioral coaching

 Screening out potential issues during hiring

 Leveraging 360-degree feedback

 Conducting meaningful exit interviews

On an individual level, learn how to deliver clear expectations, hold accountability,

and determine when to use corrective tools such as counselling, coaching, warnings,

or a performance improvement plan. When all else fails, leaders must understand

when employee termination or advanced employee discipline procedures

become necessary. This also ties into organizational culture change, retention of

psychological safety, and alignment with modern HR solutions and DEI principles.

Why Should You Attend?

Some employees expertly navigate power structures—flattering decision-makers

while mistreating peers or using technical expertise to intimidate coworkers.

Organizations unintentionally reinforce toxicity when they protect these individuals

due to their skills, ignore feedback, or fail to define behavioral expectations.

While changing someone’s attitude is nearly impossible, leaders can always address

the behaviors that harm others. Clear communication, accountability, and thoughtful

consequences can shift conduct and protect the team.
