Malliway's Academy: Folk Magic Course

Introducing our new multi-part series of magical study the Chicago Folk Magic Course. Unlike our other classes, in these lessons we will work through a curriculum to advance with the art of folk magic from class to class. This will include homework, in-class experimentation, taking on magical disciplines, and personal attention in smaller groups.

Our first class begins on Nov. 16 and will repeat weekly through to the 7th. It is always best to come to each class but if you miss a few then there will be material to take home and work on by yourself to catch up for the next class!

If you come to all four, you will earn a Folk Magic diploma, which will come in handy for future courses.

• Nov 16th: Our first class will involve an introduction to Folk Magic, why it is such a powerful practice, historical examples, how it evolves from place to place, and the importance of locality. In this class we will practice an array of disciplines based on sources of power available to our local land and culture. Each member will then choose a discipline as their area of focus for the course.
• Nov 23: Our second class in this course will focus on the unique landscapes, energies, cultures, and legends of the Chicago area. We will use this to build an understanding of its power and how we can develop it into a magical tradition. In this class, we will work with the magic of location. Each attendee will be asked to bring an item from a unique landmark of the Chicago area.
• Nov 30: Our third class will focus on connecting to spirits of the dead, place, nature, and so on. We will learn about the differences between these spirits, how to work with them, commune, make pacts, and give offerings. During this class we will practice conjuring friendly spirits to work acts of magic with.
• Dec 7: Our fourth and final class will focus on the different roles of witches in their communities, crafting folk spells, and using each student's discipline to build their own unique practices from what they've learned. In this class we will combine what we learned to develop rituals as a group for each student's new practice.
