An introductory course on using FFMPEG to edit, share, and convert video files without using expensive editing software. FFMPEG is the building block of most video editing and playback software. Learn how to access it directly and for free using just your computer’s built in tools. An introductory course open to all levels, ideal for archivists, artists, and caretakers of home movies.
The workshop will cover:
-An introduction to using the command line, which is a direct way to access your computer’s tools. Playful and fun commands you can run!
-Step-by-step walk through on downloading Homebrew and FFMPEG, two essential tools for editing and making video files.
-Detailed instructions and walk throughs of some basic commands
-Making a test file from nothing
-Changing a video file from an uncompressed video to a MP4 ideal for streaming and sharing
-Make a ProRes files for editing
-Trim files
-Combine two or more files.
-Play around with making our own gifs from video files!
We will also point to tools and tips on finding ffmpeg instructions for more technical tasks.
We recommend bringing your laptop and a power source.
