Event description

Description

What’s your pleasure? Clients don’t always know what they need, which makes psychotherapy, coaching, teaching and other change-making activities extra challenging. We often end up asking “How was your week?” and our clients often end up by responding with the laundry list of happenings, reports, thoughts and musings.

Not unsurprisingly, our people often don’t know what they need, perhaps due to longtime personal and family patterns of habitually meeting others’ needs, or because they are overwhelmed and cannot yet sort out what is important for their growth and what is not. Often they are not in touch with their bodies – the best instrument for identifying needs – so they work from the intellectual belief rather than here-and-now presence or fulfill their needs with overeating, shopping, collecting, and other activities of consumption.

In this interactive training workshop, instructed by Karen Carnabucci, LCSW, TEP, we explore the many ways to support our people in identifying and expressing their needs more fully, which allow for the therapy, coaching or learning session to gain more richness and depth. At the same time, we practice identifying our own professional needs for the training content itself, noticing what we need to grow professionally – supervision on a client or type of client? Reducing the irriration with a client or kind of client?

In this training workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Begin conversations with clients, students and others about needs.
  • Teach simple mindfulness and felt-sense activities that support practice and competence identifying personal needs.
  • Use sociometric activities to identify and experience choices rather than intellectualizing about them.
  • Focus on your own needs for training and supervision in the here-and-now.
  • Respond to clients’ and students’ needs creatively with action structures and experiential activities that allow for change and resolution.

Presentation methods will include lecture, experiential activities and demonstration, group discussion and handouts. There will be ample time for questions, discussion and case consultation, as well as the option to address personal issues in a confidential atmosphere.

The fee for this training workshop is $85 if registered by Nov. 1 and $105 after. The tuition includes the training day; six CE credits for social workers, marriage and family therapists and licensed professional counselors; psychodrama credit hours toward psychodrama certification; handouts; and healthy snacks. All participants will receive a certificate of attendance to use in their respective organizations.

This training day is suitable for:

Mental health professionals, marriage and family therapists, creative arts therapists, addiction counselors, physicians and other medical professionals, personal and wellness coaches, educators, clergy, community and social activists, alternative health practitioners and others interested in experiential methods.

Participants will have the option to address personal issues in a supportive and confidential setting, as well as bring past or present client cases forward for supervision.
