About this event
Ready to make a one-of-a-kind bowl for yourself, a beloved Knitter, or even Crocheter? Let’s Make a Yarn Bowl! In this class, each student will turn a bowl and learn to apply side wall cuttings and carvings that make it perfect for yarn both synthetic and natural! Using the Lathe, head stock chucks, and carbide tools, bowl blanks will be mounted. Students will learn to how to determine wood figure and features, shape to their preference, and how to make a mortise. The blank will then be reversed and held in a chuck while the inside is hollowed and smoothed to a high grit finish. Students will practice the cuts appropriate for shaping and smoothing the inside and outside ensuring appropriate wall thickness using carbide turning tools and sanding techniques to ensure suitability for various types of yarn fibers. Finally, using a hand drill, various rasps, and hand saws students will carve out their yarn and needle channels. After sanding the new grooves and channels the Bowl will be ready to go home with their turner ready for immediate use or ready to gift.
