A carving axe is without doubt the most useful and versatile of all greenwood carving tools, and to make best use of one a chopping or axe block is essential.
A chopping block is an essential woodland device for anyone wanting to develop their greenwood carving hobby. Whilst not a particularly difficult thing to make, the challenge for many is accessing a suitably large hunk of wood - to make a solid and stable block, a large and heavy log slice is desirable. We will use locally harvested timber, mostly from our own woodlands, and mostly from trees that need to come down for safety, or are windblown.
Of course once you have carved and attached the legs to the block, it still isn't really a chopping block until you've chopped some wood on it! We will spend the rest of the day introducing you to safe axe technique, leading hopefully to a completed project or two. Finally, a little advice on purchasing an axe if you haven't already got one.
This is a great way to unwind, connect with nature and explore your more creative side. The course will run from my woodland workshop in Ghyll Wood on the fabulous Wyresdale Park estate. We can make use of both indoor and outdoor space depending on the weather, and a wood burner will keep us toasty warm on the coldest of days.As with all our courses we can arrange a private booking for an individual or small group on an alternative date. Please just get in touch.
