The workshop builds on existing knowledge of signs and symbols and provides instruction for extra signs and symbols specific to this area of need and access to further resources.
Participants are invited to consider differing protocols and practice. Activities of the workshop will enable participants to consider how the vocabulary may be safely applied to promote communication for people who use Makaton within a range of levels and contexts.
This unique workshop provides signs and symbols for a range of vocabulary covering a number of topics:
- People: family, relationships and people around us
- Body parts and clothes
- Places
- Feelings: feelings, thoughts and behaviours (including bullying and abuse)
- Sexual behaviour
Duration
Safeguarding training is made up of 4 modules delivered in 2 full day sessions, 14th & 21st October 2025, 9.30-4pm. Particpants must be able to attend both dates in full. The training is based online. Participants must have a computor or device with camera. You will be required to have your camera on at all times so tutor can assess sign production.
Entry criteria
Participants must have completed levels 1 and 2 Makaton prior to undertaking this training.
In preparation for the workshop you will need to make sure you are confident in using the signs and symbols from Stages 1-4 and Additional of the Core Vocabulary. You may bring your copies of the Core Vocabulary books to refer to during the workshop.
Study materials
You will receive a Participant's Manual, which includes the Makaton symbols and signs that you learn in the workshop.You will cover approximately 300 signs.
You will also be given a certificate of attendance. Please remember to keep your training certificate in case you want to attend further Makaton training.
In the event a participant cannot attend, a course tranfer will be offered onto the next available course. One transfer maximum, transfers must be taken within 12 month of original booking date.
