Low Carbon Teaching Methods
Overview
Presenter : Julie Patarin-Jossec
This webinar examines how climate change not only stands to alter what we teach, but how we do so. It discusses how everyday teaching practices generate carbon emissions, and introduces tools and methods to reduce these emissions. Both in online and in-person courses, instructors are required to use a wide range of platforms and tools that all have their carbon print: data center used for internet search, electronics used to store and share documents, web storage to share online documentation with students, etc. Over the past decade, a lot of engineering development and research has allowed developers to create and circulate alternatives to these tools–such as small file web design, low carbon consumer electronics, as well as independently/locally owned options for messaging, email, collaborative documents, web hosting. Beyond these low carbon technologies, and how they are specifically used in our teaching, this webinar introduces practices that more directly relate to pedagogical resources used to prepare, deliver, and grade classes (such as favoring sustainable publishers and solar powered media in the selection of course materials, encouraging DYI resources, and how to search for resources and course materials with less carbon footprint). The webinar will conclude with how the methods discussed, although focused on pedagogy, can apply to instructor’s research and administration activities.
