Event description

Description

Join us at the Library for a wonderful summer afternoon with New Camaldoli hermitage Prior Cyprian Consiglio and acclaimed writer Pico Iyer!

The pair will share songs, stories, and ideas from their respective journeys, one as a longtime monk who writes and composes and records music and travels the world, the other as a lifelong writer and traveler who spends much of his time in Prior Cyprian’s New Camaldoli Hermitage.

Here's how the afternoon will play out:

3 pm - Meet and greet, browse the books in the Library, including many by Pico Iyer, have some good wine to drink, light snacks, cheese, listen to music being played over our speaker system, and then:

4 pm - Father Cyprian and Pico Iyer take the stage.

5:30 pm - Q & A

$10-20 suggested donation.

About the performers

Pico Iyer is the author of twelve books, including The Lady and the Monk, The Global Soul, The Open Road (about his decades of talks and travels with the XIVth Dalai Lama) and, most recently, The Art of Stillness.

He has written for Time, The New York Times, Harper’s and many other magazines for more than 25 years now, and his three talks for TED have received more than 8 million views.*

Cyprian Consiglio is an American composer, musician, Camaldolese monk and Catholic priest. He is noted for his musical work to support the practice of meditation.

He is the author of two books. Prayer in the Cave of the Heart: The Universal Call to Contemplation and Spirit, Soul, Body: Toward an Integral Christian Spirituality. Consiglio began his recording career in his early twenties, and has since gone on to record numerous collections of original music in a wide variety of styles.

Though much of his early work was in Catholic liturgical music much of his latest work incorporates styles and sacred texts from a wide variety of cultures and spiritual traditions.

* Pico being well known to us here at the Library because he wrote an appreciation in Time magazine in 1991 to commemorate the centennial of Henry Miller’s birth called ‘An American Optimist.’ (We will have this on display the day of the event!)
