We’ll kick things off with a warm welcome and get to know each other. We’ll also do a quick and fun icebreaker to share some of the cool ideas you might want to paint.

Dreaming Up Ideas


Let's get those creative gears turning! We’ll do a guided brainstorming activity, like sketching or mind mapping, to help you brainstorm ideas for your masterpiece. No idea is a bad idea!

Canvas Work Time


Students transfer their ideas to canvas. Circulate to offer personalized feedback and assistance.

Painting Time!


This is your time to shine! You'll transfer your ideas from paper to canvas using acrylic paints. Our instructors will be walking around to offer tips, answer questions, and help bring your vision to...

Cleanup & Wrap-Up

Hosted in the inspiring space of October Gallery and led by resident artist Tony Howard, this series is the perfect opportunity to connect with fellow artists, hone your skills, and make art in a relaxed and social environment.

A bit about the October Gallery: The October Gallery, located at 6353 Greene Street in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia, has been a vibrant hub for connecting people with art since 1985.1 It is one of the oldest African American art galleries in the nation, with a mission to showcase and promote African American art and culture. The gallery displays a rich collection of paintings, photographs, and drawings, and is known for its welcoming atmosphere and commitment to art education in the community.2

Whether you're a complete beginner curious about picking up a pencil or an experienced painter looking for a dedicated time to create, you'll find a welcoming space here.

Each session is a unique 3-hour experience, alternating between the dynamic energy of live model drawing and the thoughtful composition of still life painting. 🎨
