Come aboard the National Loon Center's Loon Pontoon, “The StewardShip,” for a fun and informative tour of Cross Lake that includes respectful (and exhilarating) observation of loons! Throughout the tour, you'll also learn about the actions we can take to conserve loons and freshwater ecosystems.

Free public tours are offered May - September 2025 on Fridays & Saturdays, 8:30 -10am & 10:00 -11:30am. After the tour, stop by our visitor center, The Nest, to view exhibits, learn about our new facility, and shop some loony merchandise!

Frequently asked questions

Where do I park and where do we meet?

Parking is available at the Crosslake Community School and limited accessible parking at the Day Use Area of the Cross Lake Recreation Area. Please allow plenty of time to walk to the docks. See the above map for walking directions to the boat docks, where you will board the pontoon.

Are binoculars and life jackets provided?

Yes, but you are also welcome to bring your own life jacket, binoculars, and/or camera. Children ten and under are required to wear a life jacket. The National Loon Center will provide various sizes of youth life jackets.

What should I bring with me?

We recommend bringing water, sunscreen, and any other personal items needed. Dress for the outdoors and to be on the pontoon for at least 1.5 hours. Please have an email copy of your reservation available, if needed. Guides will check in passengers by the name included on your party's reservation.

Are there weather cancellations?

Tours will be canceled in the event of inclement weather, including rain or high wind. National Loon Center staff will monitor weather conditions and notify participants at least 24 hours in advance of weather cancellations. If your tour is canceled, please check the calendar for other open tours!

Is the boat ADA accessible?

ADA requirements are met by our 31' boat, and we only ask to be informed of any ADA needs prior to the departure date to make necessary adjustments. We have a ramp available to assist wheelchair and walker users in boarding the pontoon.
