The London SPE Net Zero Gaia committee is pleased to offer this webinar aimed at providing viewers with improved understanding of the business models for CCUS. An excellent range of speakers will provide insights from the viewpoint of: the Regulator (BEIS); the Industry Trade Association (CCSA); and of Scottish industrial decarbonisation through NECCUS. It promises to be a thought-provoking discussion.

The technology to capture, transport and store CO2 has been available for decades, including projects in the USA from the 1970’s and 80’s and in Norway (Sleipner) since 1996. Despite independent bodies such as the IEA and the UK’s Climate Change Committee agreeing on the criticality of CCUS to reach Net Zero, there are currently less than 50 active projects globally. It can be argued that a key reason for this is the lack of business models to enable the commercial delivery of CCUS projects.

In the UK, plans for developing CCS projects - centred around industrial clusters - have been progressing rapidly in recent years but commercialisation of these projects has required clearer definition on the business models. The publication by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) in January-2022 of an update for the business model will hopefully introduce increased commercial certainty as part of ongoing consultation.

Antony Miller, Head of CCUS T&S Delivery, Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy

Antony Miller currently heads the BEIS team responsible for developing the CCUS transport and storage regulatory (TRI) model. Prior to joining BEIS, Antony spent 7 years with Centrica Storage leading their regulatory engagement with Ofgem, BEIS and the CMA. A major achievement while at CSL was securing changes to the regulated commercial model for CSL to address the impacts a significant asset integrity issue. Antony also spent 2 years at Ofgem where he was responsible for implementing economic regulation for gas storage facilities.

Antony holds a Master’s in Economics from the University of Melbourne.

Chris Gent, Policy Manager, Carbon Capture and Storage Association

Chris is a Policy Manager at the Carbon Capture and Storage Association based in Westminster where he works with CCSA members to promote and support the development of commercial CCUS industry in the UK and Europe.

In his role, Chris has worked extensively on a range of UK activities focussing on the emerging CCUS policy framework, engaging with Industry, Government and wider CCUS stakeholders to deliver the CCUS projects required to achieve UK climate targets. Prior to joining CCSA Chris worked for five years as a geologist at the British Geological Survey (BGS). His work at the BGS included appraising offshore CO2 storage sites and investigating hydrocarbon and geothermal potential in the UK.

Ronnie Quinn, Chief Executive Officer, NECCUS

Ronnie is Chief Executive of NECCUS, the membership organisation supporting and representing members through the challenge of industrial decarbonisation primarily through Carbon Capture and Hydrogen. He has over 30 years’ experience in general management, with specific experience in the renewables and electricity industries. Ronnie’s professional career began as a solicitor where he worked both in private practice and in local government. He then moved into the electricity markets’ sector where he was Managing Director of the company administering the market in Scotland. Ronnie has worked for The Crown Estate where he led the transfer of its functions in Scotland to Scottish Ministers, being Crown Estate Scotland’s first Chief Executive. More recently he has been the Interim Chief Executive for the Scottish Council for Development and Industry. Ronnie also sits on the Board of Management of City of Glasgow College.
