The Wallace Foundation invites you to consider hosting a Watch Party with your faculty members and key stakeholders to view a livestreamed panel discussion on preliminary findings from its University Principal Preparation Initiative (UPPI). We believe the livestreamed event could provide those of you interested in program reform with an opportunity to follow the live event with discussion relevant to your own university and local context.

According to a 2016 survey, many district and university leaders agreed that most university-based programs did not prepare principals to reflect the real-world demands of the job. Seven universities, participating in the Wallace initiative, set out to redesign their programs to be more effective. And now, a new independent study by the RAND Corporation suggests that the universities’ complex redesign efforts are beginning to pay off—through comprehensive, interdependent partnerships with local districts and the state.

The panel will focus on one UPPI participant, Florida Atlantic University, and its partners.

  • Paul Burns, Deputy Chancellor for Educator Quality, Florida Department of Education

  • Annemarie Dilbert, Principal, Crosspointe Elementary School, The School District of Palm Beach County

  • Daniel Reyes-Guerra, Associate Professor and UPPI Director, Florida Atlantic University

  • Ted Toomer, Director of Leadership Development, Broward County Public Schools

  • Steve Tozer, Professor Emeritus in Educational Policy studies, University of Illinois Chicago

Wallace will provide each Watch Party host with suggested discussion questions to help foster conversation. The host may also request hard copies of the RAND report, Launching a Redesign of University Principal Preparation Programs (2018), for advance reading or distribution at the event.

There will also be an opportunity to submit questions for the panelists following the livestreamed discussion, 11:30 a.m.- 12:00 noon.
