About the Live Room Jam Session
Join me, Matt Friedland, co-owner of Music Lessons Arizona, for a one-of-a-kind event that brings our adult students, teachers, and advanced players together for a full day of live music, creative learning, and musical connection.
I’ll be leading the session, and several of our teachers will be joining as well to perform, guide, and support throughout the day.
Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate, or more advanced player, this event will deepen your understanding of how music works and give you the chance to connect with others in a collaborative, inspiring environment.
💡 Can’t stay the whole day? No problem. You’re welcome to drop in for the sessions that interest you or stay for the full experience.
🗓️ Event Schedule
🎤 10:30 AM – 12:45 PM
This session is an expanded version of our regular Adult Piano Student Gathering, where students typically bring food, perform solo pieces, and share insights with one another on their musical journey. For this special edition, we’re adding a live staff performance featuring our instructors Laura Cable on vocals, Amberli Chiang on piano and Allen Winward on drums and an instructional workshop to deepen the learning experience.
You’ll start by watching our staff band perform songs like Dreams, Count on Me, and Come Away With Me, then dive into how chords and keys function in real music — no dry theory, just practical tools you can apply to your own playing.
- Learn how lead sheets work and how to read chord symbols without relying on full notation
- Understand where chords come from and how they form the foundation of songs
- Receive downloadable PDFs and lead sheets you can use in your own practice or lessons
🎹 Primarily for adult piano students, but guitar, bass and drum students are warmly invited to attend as well. While the piano students tend to work from classical repertoire and the guitar students from pop/rock, this is a great opportunity for both groups to connect and gain insight into the broader musical landscape.
🎶 Student Performances (Optional): If you're a piano student and would like to share a solo piece, we’d love to hear you play — but there’s no pressure. You're also welcome to attend, observe, and enjoy the music and discussion.
Lunch Included: Enjoy light wraps, salad, and refreshments while connecting with fellow students.
🎷 1:00 – 2:45 PM
Session 2: Jazz Group Performance + Open Q&A
- Watch our studio’s advanced jazz/funk students perform and improvise
- Get a behind-the-scenes look at how real musicians communicate, build arrangements, and listen to each other
- Learn how the structures of tunes like Cissy Strut, So What, and Do It Again create space for creativity
- Ask questions and gain insights that help you jam with more confidence
🎸 3:00 – 5:00 PM
Session 3: Open Jam for All Students
- Join fellow students to jam on tunes from Comfortably Numb, Come Together, Cocaine, Zombie, When I Come Around and more
- Matt will help guide the session — no pressure, just play what you know and have fun
- Optional student performances are welcome (e.g., songs you've been working on in lessons)
🌙 5:00 – 7:00 PM (Optional)
Late Night Jam: Feeling inspired? Stick around for a more casual, late afternoon jam and hangout session.Additional food and drinks provided.
