The Sounds Inside of Me: A Reading and Conversation with Gabriela Damián Miravete

Join UIC’s Center for Latinx Literature of the Americas for an English-language presentation and discussion with Mexico-based award winning author, Gabriela Damián Miravete.

Focusing on the theme of “Women and Horror” in the genre of Latin American Gothic, Damián Miravete will give an introduction to her recent publication They Will Dream in the Garden translated by Adrian Demopulos (Rosarium, 2023). The author will discuss some of the topics, inspirations, and literary genres present throughout the short stories and read selected passages from the publication including “The Bridge” and “Music and Petals”.

A conversation moderated by 2025 Lit & Liz Collaboration Cohort member and UIC Professor of Latin American Literature, Margarita Saona, will follow.

Los sonidos de mi interior: lectura y conversatorio con Gabriela Damián Miravete

Acompáñenos en el Centro de Literatura Latinx de las Américas de la UIC en una presentación de la galardonada autora mexicana Gabriela Damián Miravete, en idioma inglés.

Con el tema central de “Mujeres y Horror” en el género gótico latinoamericano, Damián Miravete presentará su más reciente publicación titulada Soñarán en el Jardín, con traducción de Adrian Demopulos (Rosarium, 2023). La autora analizará algunos de los temas, inspiraciones y géneros literarios presentes en sus cuentos y leerá pasajes seleccionados de la publicación, incluyendo “The Bridge” y “Music and Petals”.

Después de la plática seguirá una conversación moderada por la profesora de Literatura Latinoamericana de la UIC Margarita Saona, miembro del grupo de colaboración del Festival Lit & Luz 2025.

The 12th annual Lit & Luz Festival of Language, Literature, and Art—as featured in, WBEZ’s Reset with Sasha-Ann Simons, Chicago Review of Books, Block Club Chicago, and more—takes place November 9 to November 14, 2025. This one-of-a-kind cross-cultural, bilingual festival brings together writers, poets, and visual artists from Mexico and Chicago for a week-long series of public programming at venues throughout Chicago.

This year’s festival––under the theme of “Repair/Reparar”–– explores how writers, poets, and artists from Chicago and Mexico critically examine the artist’s role in impacting and offering new perspectives on what it takes to face and reimagine our shared realities.
