HPCC (High Performance Computing Cluster) Systems from LexisNexis is an open source massive parallel-processing computing platform that solves Big Data problems. In this talk, attendees will be given an overview of HPCC Systems and see a demonstration of its use to parse data from free-form and semi-structured text. This represents a combined text extraction task with human intervention. The code elements and massively parallel processing principles involved in accomplishing these tasks will be thoroughly discussed. Attendees will leave with all the data and code used in the class along with the latest links to the HPCC Systems Client Tools installation, HPCC Systems documentation, and HPCC Systems VMware installation.

We will cover the following topics:

HPCC Systems Platform Overview - A brief discussion of the specific platform used in this demonstration
Getting the Data to the Cluster - A demonstration of the spraying techniques available in HPCC that are required to get our data loaded on to the HPCC Systems Data Refinery (THOR)
Parsing Unstructured Data - A thorough discussion of the techniques implemented by the ECL code that are required to accomplish the task of extracting relevant information from unstructured text, along with a comparison of the differences and similarities between the code for semi-structured text extraction versus the code for semi-structured text extraction.
Post-Processing Parse Results - A demonstration and discussion of the type of post-processing that becomes possible only when relevant information has been extracted from its semi-structured or unstructured format
Building a Robust Query Tool with ROXIE - The demonstration concludes by building a search service into something that can be driven from a SOAPCall or via the Web.

This tutorial is geared towards developers. Anyone who is tasked with or has an interest in entity resolution as it pertains to big data is encouraged to attend. Attendees are welcome to bring their own laptops to take away the code and examples from the class. View more at http://hpccsystems.com.

Bob Foreman has worked with the HPCC Systems technology platform and the ECL programming language for over 5 years, and has been a technical trainer for over 25 years. He is the developer and designer of the HPCC Systems Online Training Courses, and is the Senior Instructor for all classroom and Webex/Lync based training.
