Past meets paste at this hands-on creative workshop exploring DC’s historic Chinatown neighborhood. The workshop begins with a scavenger hunt through the neighborhood, where you’ll identify images that reflect the vibrancy and history of Chinatown. Back at the National Portrait Gallery’s art workshop and education space, you’ll make a collage inspired by D.C.’s Chinatown and the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center’s exhibition, Sightlines: Chinatown and Beyond. Light snacks, a notebook, and art-making materials for collaging will be provided—with a DC-inspired soundtrack playing in the background!

Where can I park?

There are several parking options, paid and unpaid, around the National Portrait Gallery. We recommend arriving early to ensure you have enough time to find parking. The metro or bus is another great way to get to the museum.

What should I do if I'm running late?

Please email APAC-Education@si.edu so that we know you are running late

Can I bring my friends?

Yes but please have them register so we have an accurate count of attendees. This ensures we have enough supplies for everyone at the workshop.

Will collage supplies be provided?

Yes, all crafting supplies will be provided for this workshop.

Will there be food?

Light snacks will be provided to participants

Will the workshop still run if it is raining?

Yes! In the event of extreme weather, like rain or extreme heat, workshop activities will be modified to be indoors.
