📚 Lecture: The Science of Complexity (And How It Can Save the World)

🎤 Speaker: Political & Data Scientist, Dr. Andrea Jones-Rooy

What do flocks of birds, schools of fish, racial segregation, stock market crashes, and global pandemics have in common? They are all examples of what complexity scientists call “emergent" outcomes—unintended macro-level consequences arising from individual decisions within networks.

Join Dr. Andrea Jones-Rooy for an exploration of the fascinating field of complexity science. She will provide an overview of how complexity scientists understand the world, tracing its origins at the intersection of physics and economics. Dr. Jones-Rooy will share insights on applying complexity theory in vital areas such as public health, climate, and happiness, revealing how it helps us make new discoveries.

Dr. Jones-Rooy is a data scientist and educator who uses quantitative methods to tackle challenges like polarization and misinformation. She has advised organizations including the United Nations and has contributed to major publications such as FiveThirtyEight and The Washington Post.
