What is a song, really? It sounds like a simple question, but to paraphrase Carl Sagan, "If you want to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe." Join us for an enlightening lecture with Mike Errico as we explore the universe of the pop song—its origins, elements, and functions in societies both ancient and modern.

Through this survey, we will culminate with a few modern examples that tie the whole universe together, aiming to inspire you in your own songwriting journey. By the end of the evening, you may find the spark for your next (or first) song!

Prof. Mike Errico is a New York-based recording artist, writer, and professor whose critically acclaimed work includes extensive compositions for film and TV. He has taught songwriting at prestigious universities like Yale and Wesleyan, and is the author of Music, Lyrics, and Life: A Field Guide for the Advancing Songwriter.
