📚 Lecture: “Buddhist Art Through the Ages”
🎤 Speaker: Professor, Dr. Pamela D. Winfield
What do wisdom and compassion look like in the Buddhist visual tradition? Join Dr. Pamela D. Winfield for an illustrated talk that delves into how artists have imagined and reimagined these enlightened virtues across various cultural contexts. This interactive gathering will encourage you to create and share your vision of wisdom and compassion, regardless of your faith perspective.
You will learn the fundamentals of Buddhist thought and practice, exploring how the symbolism of selfless wisdom and boundless compassion has shaped the dharma through four major historical developments. By examining select examples of Theravada, Mahayana, Zen, and Esoteric (tantric) Buddhist imagery, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the role of visual culture in advancing Buddhist ideas across centuries and regions.
Dr. Winfield is a Professor of Buddhist Studies at Elon University and a recognized scholar in the field. Artists, writers, and fellow creatives are welcome—no prior experience with art or knowledge of Buddhism is required. Bring a pad and pencil, and enjoy!
