📚 Lecture: “A Brief History of Photography”
🎤 Speaker: Bette Sloane
Long before we filtered selfies and snapped stories, photography was a marvel of science and patience—capturing light with metal plates and hours of exposure. This lecture traces photography’s evolution from the mysterious camera obscura to the first permanent photo in 1826, exploring how photographs have shaped revolutions, recorded history, and redefined identity.
From the battlefields of early photojournalism to the curated lives on social media, this is the story of a science and an art: how humanity learned to see itself—one frame at a time.
Bette Sloane is a photographer and educator with 18 years in high school and collegiate mathematics education, complemented by a rich background in the arts and a passion for art history. She holds a BFA in Photography and multiple graduate degrees in Mathematics Education from Columbia University. Bette has received national recognition for her innovative approach to integrating art and mathematics in education and has traveled to 51 countries exploring the intersections of art, math, and culture.
