This two-hour class provides a foundational understanding of CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines, covering essential concepts for beginners. We'll start with an overview of CNC functionality, including machine components, coordinate systems, and basic operations.

Next, we’ll explore VCarve Pro, a powerful CAD/CAM software used to design projects and generate toolpaths. You'll learn how to create simple designs, set up toolpaths, and prepare files for cutting.

We'll also discuss CNC bits, their types, and how to choose the right one for your project.

Understanding feed rate and spindle speed is crucial for safe and efficient cutting, so we’ll cover the basics of identifing and adjusting these settings.

This class focuses on understanding CNC concepts, software, and cutting parameters. You'll gain the foundational knowledge needed for the second class, where we will cover hands-on machine operation and cutting techniques.

No prior experience needed for this course, all supplies and materials are provided.

As part of this course, you’ll learn:

  • VCarve Pro Basics – Designing projects, setting up toolpaths, and exporting files for CNC machining.
  • CNC Bits and Tooling – Different bit types, their uses, and selecting the right tool for your project.
  • Feed Rate and Spindle Speed – Understanding how speed settings impact cut quality and tool longevity.
  • Basic CNC Functionality – Machine components, coordinate systems, and how CNC machines interpret toolpaths.

Hello everyone! I’m John. I’ve been passionate about woodworking for about six years and am really enthusiastic about fostering a community within CCM. Originally from Lubbock, TX, I relocated to Denver in mid-2016 to pursue a career in software engineering. I’m eager to teach classes and contribute to expanding both the woodshop and our community offerings at the Makerspace. Besides woodworking, I have a keen interest in 3D design and printing, software development, gaming, and climbing. I live nearby, so you’ll probably see me around quite often! I look forward to connecting with all of you and building something great together.
