Broward Center for Nonprofit Excellence has partnered with nationally recognized BoardSource facilitators to kick off a year long focus on building, strengthening, renewing, and invigorating your Board of Directors.

This 4 session series is designed for the President/CEO/Executive Director AND 2 board members, ideally the board chair and another executive board member. The 3 of you attend all 4 sessions together and take what you learn back to the rest of the members. To maximize your time and convenience, the first and last session are IN PERSON at Community Foundation of Broward, and the other two sessions are VIRTUAL via zoom. Commit your trio, your energy and ideas to all 4 sessions, and the Nonprofit Center will cover the entire cost of the program!

SESSION 1: Governance Legacy

The most successful nonprofit boards have a collaborative team culture, working as a governing team in partnership with the executive. The starting point for building this culture involves a shared understanding of the work and the line between management and governance. Creating shared understandings of the principles of board membership and the ways in which you can assess the success of your board will be addressed. What do you want your board’s governance legacy to be?

Learning Objectives:

· Identify the internal and external forces impacting organizations

· Outline the roles and responsibilities of board members

· Consider the roles and responsibilities of the executive and other staff

· Determine the components needed to build of a culture of inquiry

Facilitator Susan Decker is an independent consultant with over 25 years of nonprofit management and leadership experience, currently working with nonprofit organizations on exceptional governance practices, fundraising, board development to increase engagement, and strategic planning. She has worked with client organizations across the globe with a including The Smithsonian, Special Olympics International, Ronald McDonald House Global Charities, ESPN, Adobe, Medtronic, Duke University, Vanderbilt University, and Annenberg Foundation.

As a trainer of consultants, Susan has served as the lead for the BoardSource Certified Governance Training program and the Certificate of Nonprofit Board Consulting.

Previously, Susan worked with two national public charities: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Susan has served on a number of nonprofit boards of directors, serving in leadership positions such as Chair of the Governance Committee and Chair of the Board. She currently serves on a local nonprofit board.
