Learning about Eastern Box Turtles with Turtle Dogs
with Dennis Goodin
Saturday, July 12 | 10 - 1 pm
BRN - Elective
The Allison Woods Outdoor Learning Center's renowned Turtle Dogs and their handlers present a program that will help visitors to learn about our state reptile, the Eastern Box turtle and discuss how the dogs are helpful to researchers and scientists with conservation and preservation efforts. If the weather is nice, we will use the Turtle Dogs to find wild Box Turtles on property as part of a state-wide study. Arboretum staff will use established protocols to mark, weigh, and take data of any turtles found during the class. If the weather is bad, we will utilize decoys to demonstrate the skill of the dogs inside.
Dennis Goodin is an Animal Education Instructor and Handler with 25 years' experience at our facility. His main focus of education is Birds of Prey and Turtle Dogs. Dennis is also an instructor of other environmental education programs which include aquatic education, trees/leaves, and wildlife.
