Join Liz and Stephanie, the bakers of James Beard nominated Kuluntu Bakery, for an evening learning how to laminate, shape and bake kouign amann!

Kouign amann is a laminated French pastry from the Brittany region of France. The name derives from the Breton language words for cake (kouign) and butter (amann).

During this class, you will learn:

  • How to mix the kouign amann dough and shape the butter block
  • How to laminate the dough by hand, the process of folding and rolling dough with butter, resulting in numerous thin, flaky layers
  • How to proof and bake the kouign amann so that you get a caramelized finished
  • Fun fillings to fill your pastries

Each participant will laminate their own dough, bake and take home six kouign amann pastries. Attendees will receive a kouign amann making guide and recipe.

This workshop is geared towards all levels of bakers. Small bites and beverages will be served. BYOB if you like!

Tickets are non-refundable, but they are transferable to another workshop if notified within one week of the class. Profits from this event will help us open a brick and mortar bakery and community space that will be focused on building stronger communities by co-creating a more equitable food system and hospitality industry with women at the center.

Kuluntu Bakery began in Cape Town, South Africa and now operates in Dallas, Texas. The meaning of “kuluntu” is “community” in isiXhosa, a South African language of the amaXhosa. We practice the principles of radical Ubuntu, which is the process of transforming the world with and from people towards a more dignity-centered, just and liberated society.
