Join us for this in-person Tuvan Throat Singing masterclass, instructed by the internationally acclaimed Throat Singer, Enrique Ugalde.
During this in-depth three-hour workshop, you will learn the three primary techniques of Tuvan-style throat singing, including Kargyraa, Khöömei, and Sygyt, as well as additional sub-styles and their cultural significance. The workshop will also cover Shamanic contexts and applications in traditional Tuvan folk music and Buddhist meditation. Additionally, the mechanics and theory of overtone singing will be explored, along with the cultural and geographical origins of this unique singing tradition. There will be a brief examination of language and an exploration of ancient, traditional melodies, and songs that have been transmitted through centuries from master to student, preserving a beautiful yet endangered culture.

Enrique Ugalde has accumulated over 20 years of teaching experience and has been singing Tuvan-style throat singing (Khöömei) since 1998. Inspired by a live performance of Throat SingingMasters, Huun Huur Tu, he has gone on to tour the world with his own project Soriah and has traveled to the Central Asian Republic of Tuva 11 times to perform, collaborate and compete as a Khöömeigie.
He achieved third place at the 2008 ThroatSinging Symposium in Tuva, the highest ranking attained by a non-Tuvan participant in the Symposium's history. He was also the recipient of the award for best foreigner at the 2008 Ustuu-Khuree Festival in Chadanaa, Tuva. In 2014, he secured second place in the Tuvan National Kargyraa Competition. His innovative contributions to the art of Tuvan ThroatSinging were recognized in 2016. In 2019, he received the award for Best Kargyraa Performance at the Khöömei in the Center of Asia International Competition in Kyzyl, Tuva. In August 2020, he was awarded the title of Foreign Wizard of Khöömei. In 2021, he received the award for Best Kargyraa Performance.
