Introduction to 3D Spatial Audio
by Dr. Garth Paine
For electroacoustic composers
Description:
This three-hour workshop offers a deep dive into the technical foundations and artistic possibilities of working with a 5th-order ambisonic dome. Participants will explore the principles of higher-order ambisonics, from encoding and decoding workflows to practical calibration and software tools, before engaging in a practical session that demonstrate real-time spatialization and creative sound design. Alongside the technical training, the workshop emphasizes spatial aesthetics, psychoacoustics, and compositional strategies, inviting participants to experiment with sound as a sculptural and narrative medium. By the end, attendees will have both practical skills and artistic insights to expand their own spatial audio practice.
