This course is intended for law enforcement officers tasked with investigating financial exploitation of elders. Instructors for the class are a law enforcement officer, prosecutor, and advocate who are subject matter experts in the field of elder justice. Learning will be done through lecture and hands-on exercises. Upon completion of the training, attendees will be able to:

  • Identify investigaiton strategies unique to elder abuse victims, and the varying range of services available to this age demographic
  • Learn how victim typology impacts the timeline of an elder financial exploitation case
  • Understand how substitute decision making designations impact elder abuse cases, such as Guardianship, Power of Attorney, and Conservatorship
  • Develop an understanding of capacity and how it impacts cases of financial exploitation
  • Understand considerations possibly needed when interviewing an elder crime victim
  • Determine how to obtain, organize, and analyze bank records
  • Understand how to present an elder financial exploitation case to a prosecutor, and learn how best to address cost of care, aggregation, and statute of limitations
