Who are we?

Don’t Be Strangers is a podcast + community championing authenticity, vulnerability and self awareness. We fight adult loneliness and emotional disconnect 👊🏼 Our mission is to create spaces that foster deep, purposeful conversations and connection by providing thoughtful events for the curious and creative.

Lauren Xu, @laurxu_ on Insta, is an avid reader thanks to starting this book club. She barely made the cusp of being a 90s kid, despite the fact that her childhood was like a 90s lucid dream. Talk to her about community, self-care, working in Digital Payments, recipe testing, being a third culture kid, and Mandopop!

Frequently asked questions

What if I dislike reading and writing?

No problem! This is a great chance to ease into it. You are not required to participate 100% of the time, you can simply come and listen.

Is there a restriction on genres / materials?

We welcome all genres barring hateful speech. We aim to be a safe space that embraces diversity in our attendees. Please reach out to me at Lauren.xu31@gmail.com if you have a specific question.

I’m hesitant in meeting strangers, but I want to come. What should I do?

I had the same concern when I first moved to a new city after college. I can vouch for the recurring and new members when I say this is a welcoming and friendly space. If you give intentional communities like this a try, you may discover that this will be a great fit! — Lauren

Can I bring work to do here? My work hours are long…

You can, as long as you are respectful of the space and the discussion. The noise level is medium and many people work at this coffee shop, of course.

I’m scared I won’t have much to say, what should I do

Listening is also welcomed! You do not have to share. Many people share only briefly, or they share a lot. This is your time to be in community.

How many people usually come?

We have recurring members at about 12+, but we are always welcoming new ones. (Updated April 18)
