Overview

Please join Boot for a walk focused on plant ID and natural history in the southeastern Fells! Please read description for location details.

Difficulty: Moderate, with some rocky inclines with uneven surfaces. Slow pace.

Appropriate for: All. Children ages 10+ welcome if accompanied by an adult.

Leader: Boot Boutwell

About Boot: Roland “Boot” Boutwell, a freelance itinerant naturalist, has been leading nature walks for the Friends of the Fells for nearly 25 years. He has also led walks and/or taught botany programs for a number of other organizations including The Trustees of Reservations, Arlington Community Education, The Massachusetts Association of Conservation Commissions, Winchester public schools, Wright-Locke Farm in Winchester, The New England Wild Flower Society and the Massachusetts Audubon Society.

About the walk: Meet at Fire Gate #55, at the Intersection of Fellsway East / East Border Road, Malden. We will take a walk in the southeastern Fells looking at plants as they prepare for winter. We’ll see if any plants are still in flower. We’ll see what plants are still in fruit. We’ll ID deciduous plants without their leaves. We’ll also look for winter weeds, those hardy herbaceous (non-woody) plants whose skeletons decorate the autumn and winter land- scape. The walk will focus on plant ID as well as fun and interesting natural history.

Meet at Fire Gate #55 at the start of the Jerry Jingle Road trail at the intersection of Fellsway East and East Border Road in Malden. There is on-street parking on the northbound side of Fellsway East, south of East Border Road. Children 10 and older welcome with a registered adult.

Steady rain cancels.

**Please do not register unless you can absolutely attend this walk. We often have waitlists and would like as many folks as possible to be able to attend.**

Contact: Contact Boot Boutwell (781-729-4712) or friends@fells.org with any questions and/or concerns.

Dogs: This program is not suitable for our furry friends (it's a moderate hike with uneven terrain). Please take a look at our calendar for other walks that are good for dogs to join!
