LAST Workshop - Intro to Creative Coding
Date and time
Description
Be sure to check out the other workshop, A Deeper Dive into Creative Coding, happening from 4:00 to 5:30. The two workshops are meant to complement each other, so attendees are encouraged to sign up for both!
Interested in Creative Code but not sure where to start? This workshop is a beginner's introduction to making art with code. No coding experience is needed - anyone interested is encouraged to come. We'll start with an overview of what creative code is, looking at many interactive examples on the way. Following that we'll jump into a hands-on walkthrough of the coding framework p5js, learning the basics of drawing shapes, colors, and mouse interaction. We'll then explore existing work on OpenProcessing.org, an online community of creative coders, and leave with a list of resources for further exploration. By the end of the workshop, attendees will know what creative coding is and what it unlocks, how to create art with code, and have next steps for deeper exploration.
Please bring your own laptops. Email hellocharlien@hotmail.com with any further questions. See you there!
Getting there: Workshops will take place at the Berryessa Conference room on the second floor of SLAC. Take the stairs to the right of the main entrance, then go through the hallway going back (to the left of the stairs).
About the instructor: Xiaohan Zhang is a New Media Artist specializing in real-time, interactive, audio-visual digital art installations and web experiences. His work is inspired by physical, chemical, biological and ecological processes of the natural world, combined with aesthetic polish and form. His work quickly changes in response to user input, creating an iterative feedback loop of play that conveys an intuitive understanding of how the system responds. He hopes that in doing so the viewer may find insight, wonder, and an appreciation of the underlying forces that govern our lives. He shows work at events, festivals, and hosts workshops with organizations such as Gray Area, CODAME, UC Berkeley, and Stanford, as well as in online exhibitions such as The Wrong biennale. You can find him online at www.hellochar.com.
