About the Historic Langston Golf Course

Langston Golf Course is a national landmark and cultural institution. Opened in 1939, it was the first golf course in Washington, D.C. built specifically for Black Americans. Named after John Mercer Langston— the first Black Virginian elected to Congress — the course quickly became a hub for Black golfers during segregation and beyond.

Over the years, Langston has welcomed legends like Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, and perhaps most notably, Lee Elder— the first Black golfer to compete in the Masters. Elder later managed the course, helping preserve and grow its legacy.

Langston is also the birthplace of the Royal Golf Club (Men) and the Wake-Robin Golf Club (Women) — the oldest Black golf clubs in America. In 1938, these clubs successfully petitioned the federal government to build Langston after demanding access to courses their taxes helped fund. Their continued advocacy led to the desegregation of D.C.’s public golf courses by 1941.
