About this Event

Pakistani and Scottish artists Michele Marcoux, Oliver Reed, Sohail Zuberi explain how their art is driven by process, physicality, ritual and memory. The discussion will be moderated by Naazish Ataullah.

Professor Naazish Ata-Ullah is an artist, educator, curator, writer and human rights activist. She is Fellow and former Principal of the National College of Arts, Lahore, and has served in advisory roles at educational, cultural and social justice institutions in Pakistan. She is a Senior Fellow at Beaconhouse National University. Naazish has exhibited in Pakistan, lectured widely, authored monographs and curated exhibitions in Pakistan, Finland and the UK. In 2010 she was awarded a Knighthood in the Order of Arts and Literature by the Republic of France. She lives and works in Lahore, Pakistan.

MICHELE MARCOUX

Michele Marcoux works across a range of media She grew up as an identical twin in North Eastern Ohio and lived in New York City and California before moving to Scotland. An engagement with shifting, transitory, even transferable ideas of ‘home’ ‘memory’ and ‘place,’ Michele’s practice explores our experience of time and change. Using drawing, painting, found objects, and images, she expresses ‘place’ as a locus of memory, dreaming, and desire. In 2019 Michele was selected to participate in the residency Taking Time/Prendendo Tempo in Collemacchia, Italy.

OLIVER REED

Oliver Reed is lecturer and Teaching Fellow at Edinburgh College of Art, and Head of Arts, Center for Open Learning, University of Edinburgh. His work has always explored the natural environment. He investigates processes and techniques, fusing oil paint and water-based materials. His current work creates digital 3D cloud-point maps of sites around Scotland that are translated and developed in the studio. He employs digital technologies alongside traditional approaches to explore geological and geomorphic features through memory, space and time.

SOHAIL ZUBERI

Sohail Zuberi is a multidisciplinary artist based in Karachi, Pakistan. His practice is a commentary on Karachi’s urban development, dichotomies and disparities. His decade-long research on the changing ecologies of a stretch of beach in Karachi involves ‘unearthing’ modern-day ‘archaeological relics’ through acts of chance encounter, exploration and excavation. He works as a design consultant with Tali and teaches fine art photography at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture.
