Nanke Dream: The covetousness

An Immersive Journey into the World of Chinese Opera

Rooted in Tang Xianzu’s classic Nanke Dream, our revived Kunqu opera scene The Covetousness brings to life a tale suspended between dream and reality — a story of identity, belief, and transformation. This rare and nearly-lost traditional piece follows characters who cross boundaries of gender and duty, driven by faith, love, and the pursuit of a self the world may never fully understand.

Chinese opera is a rich storytelling tradition that weaves together music, movement, costume and voice. But this time, you’re invited not just to watch the dream — but to step into it.

Our Opera Experience Workshop, held both before and after the performance of The Covetousness, offers an up-close, hands-on encounter with the art of Kunqu opera. From traditional make-up to stylised movement and costume exploration, this is your chance to engage directly with the details that make Chinese opera such a captivating theatrical form. Become not only a spectator, but a participant — and perhaps even a storyteller in your own right.

What you’ll experience:

1. Personalised Face Painting

Sit before the dressing mirror and paint your own unique opera mask —

Every line and flourish will be your own creation, guided by a professional instructor specialising in traditional hua lian (painted face) techniques. We provide all the tools and traditional Chinese oil-based pigments; you bring the inspiration. Under expert guidance, learn the symbolism and brush techniques behind hua lian, and create your character’s face with your own hands.

2. Immersive Movement Session

Learn and mimic key movement phrases from The Covetousness, guided by our performers —

Feel the elegance and strength of Kunqu’s physical language as it flows through your fingers, your spine, your breath. This is storytelling written in posture, poised and powerful.

3. Traditional Costume Experience + Digital Photo Opportunity (optional)

Admire authentic Chinese opera costumes up close — their textures, embroidery and silhouette —

Then step into one yourself, pose under guidance in classical postures, and capture the moment in a professional digital photograph. A lasting memento from your day on the edge of the stage.

Good to know:

  • Enjoy complimentary Chinese kung fu tea (traditional Chinese tea) during the workshop — sip and savour the flavours of tradition as you listen, learn, and engage.

  • Traditional Chinese oil pigments are used for the face painting experience. These richly coloured paints are designed to stay in place for a short time after application. If you have sensitive skin, we recommend taking precautionary measures. You're welcome to remove the paint after the event, or keep it a little longer as a wearable memory of your time with us. We’ll also provide gentle cleansing supplies on site if needed.

  • Perfect for couples, families, and friends — whether you're here to try something new, take memorable photos, or discover traditional theatre together, this is a shared moment unlike any other.
