We need your help! With help from Johnny Tromboukis of JT Woodworks, we are designing a large-scale Japanese inspired pattern that will be part of a larger wall design. The area that this kumiko “grid” will fit into is going to be ~4’ x 6’ and will require 500+ small pieces of wood to be cut, chiseled and glued together to make a decorative pattern.
You know what that means… we need a couple of community making sessions!
Join us on Friday, Nov 7 and/or Saturday, Nov 8 from noon - 4pm to help us create this large-scale kumiko project!
These two making sessions are free and open to the public. No experience necessary, we’ll have a couple of tasks planned out for people to help with, or just come by to watch and learn more about the process. You can also check out the exhibit, "From Far East" in Main Street Studio's gallery space that showcases some of Johnny's kumiko work, as well as work from other regional artists practicing tradtional Japanese craft forms.
Community collab activities include:
- Measuring and using hand tools to cut wooden strips to length
- Using sharp chisels and "jigs" to create accurate angles on the ends of the cut wood strips
- Arranging and glueing cut pieces of wood into a pre-contrsructed grid to form the patterns
Note, kids are welcome to watch, but you must be 18 or older to work with the chisels. Tools used in this activity are SHARP and require focus and fine motor skills to safely use.
We hope this project inspires more creative projects! RSVP for one of the time slots to come and help!
