KRUSH GROOVE: 40th Anniversary!
Overview
From director Michael Schultz (The Last Dragon, Cooley High, Car Wash), comes the 1985 hip-hop motion picture classic that brought the beat to the big screen. Starring Run-D.M.C., Sheila E., The Fat Boys, Kurtis Blow, New Edition, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, and packed with a wicked soundtrack featuring Chaka Khan, Debbie Harry, The Gap Band, and Force M.D.’s, KRUSH GROOVE is pure old-school energy.
The story follows Russell Walker (Blair Underwood) as he launches a hot new label—Krush Groove—home to Kurtis Blow and Run-D.M.C. But when success hits faster than the cash can flow, Russell finds himself hustling to keep the dream alive as the New York rap scene explodes. Loosely based on the rise of Def Jam Records, this film is a true cornerstone of hip-hop cinema.
Before collaborating with Spike Lee on Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X, and She’s Gotta Have It, cinematographer Ernest R. Dickerson captured the vibrant world of KRUSH GROOVE, fresh off his work on another ’80s gem, The Brother from Another Planet. Fun fact: it also marks the feature film debuts of Blair Underwood and Chris Rock (blink and you’ll miss him!).
