Overview

Learn how to put a razor sharp edge on a knife using a variety of common techniques.

No matter how good the knife, eventually it will need to be sharpened. In this class you'll get hands on experience using a few common sharpening techniques. Learn to put a razor sharp edge on any metal knife in minutes.

Bring a couple of knives that you'd like to practice on. (They will be nice and sharp at the end of the class.)

Class length: 2 hours

Outline:

  1. Overview of techniques.
  2. A little bit about commercial knife sharpeners. Which are the best?
  3. Knife materials and construction.
  4. What constitutes a good knife edge?
  5. What angle to sharpen to?
  6. Using whetstones.
  7. Using a leather strop.
  8. Using a sanding block type of tool.
  9. Getting motorized: Using a 1x30 belt sander.
  10. What is a steel used for?
  11. Reshaping broken tips and edges.
  12. Re-sharpening and taking care your knives.

Minimum age: 14 years of age.

Maximum class size: 6 attendees

Instructor: Todd Myers. Todd started sharpening knives as a teenager in the Boy Scouts. That was quite some ago, and has been at it since.
