Kintsugi Workshop - The Art of Broken Pottery

By Flingin Pots

Overview

Get down with Wabi-Sabi and mending broken pottery!

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. This technique, which means "golden joinery," not only restores functionality but also makes the repair a beautiful, visible part of the object's history. Kintsugi is a practice rooted in the philosophy of wabi-sabi, which embraces imperfection, impermanence, and the acceptance of flaws as part of an object's unique story. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.

As we move into 2026, healing and reconstruction of one's self is reflected in the Kintsugi process.

In this workshop, we will be breaking a pre-made ceramic bowl, learning about the 5 R’s to the Kintsugi process and mending our bowls back together with glues, epoxy, putty and various gold embellishments.
